Mini 5 Tors Event 2009

Thanks to everyone's contribution, this year's M5T was one of the best attended for many years; given the positive comments - which might owe a little to the excellent weather - lots of people want to come back again next year and some of the walkers are looking forward to Ten Tors on 2010 and subsequent years.

We had about a 100 Cub Scouts, Scouts and Explorer Scouts + 27 adult leaders and members of the Ten Tors Training Team making approaching 140 participants all told - brilliant - a great platform on which to build next year's event.

Ten Tors 2009 Report

Scout Groups across the Teignbridge District have been competing successfully in the Ten Tors Challenge for over thirty years. The teams of 6 have achieved outstanding results in both 2008 and 2009 with all seven teams completing successfully - 4 teams at 35 miles, 2 at 45 miles and 1 at 55 miles. The Scouts' success reflects the benefits of the tried and tested training programme established by the late Ivor Kingwell, who died tragically young in November last year whilst leading a scout group on Dartmoor, having run the operation for many years. The programme is currently delivered by a training team of more than a dozen dedicated adult leaders who provide the training, support and safety cover for fortnightly weekend moorland exercises backed up by specific skills training evenings. Their investment ensures that every scout who successfully completes the whole programme has an excellent prospect of completing the event itself.

Mike Ruffles said 'The collective achievement of a100% completion by all seven teams, comprising 42 Scouts, for the second year in succession reflects the commitment to excel on the part of all concerned; this is an outstanding achievement and a fitting tribute to Ivor Kingwell's memory, providing the foundation for a strong Scouting investment in future years.'

IVOR KINGWELL - Obituary

Ivor Kingwell first came to my notice, when one of the Scout Leaders at the Highweek Village Group told me that he had a new leader from Watts Blake and Bearn PLC.

This was not surprising because three of the groups leaders came from that company.

These leaders introduced a young 22 year old quiet spoken and almost introvert young man as the new Assistant Scout Leader.

Ivor never got excited, spoke quietly and never made any comments on the things that he did.

Ivor got on with the leadership in the group, and in 1973, he entered a team for the “Ten Tors Challenge” for the first time. This was a 35 mile team. He had success with this when all six returned. The Group was so proud of this achievement.

Ivor, developed this challenge until Highweek had four teams, three 35 mils and one 45 mile. He was meticulous in the planning, and in the preparation. The only standard he would accept was one of Excellence.

Everything Ivor set out to achieve was successful, and was undertaken to a high standard.

Ivor progressed this concept of “Ten Tors Challenge” into the District and kept it alive until his untimely death at Ripon Tor on Sunday 23rd November 2008.

Ivor also contributed to the District by becoming the Chairman of the “Appointments Committee” and had much Experience in making judgements on new leaders for suitability in their chosen sections of the Scouting Movement.

Ivor was Quiet, reliable, and always sincere in everything he did and said. He was a Gentleman, a great friend always with a word of encouragement for those around him.

His quiet efficiency inspired everyone who knew him. He will be sorely missed.

He will NEVER BE REPLACED. It was a privilege to know him, he was a giant among men.

Thank you Ivor for all you work, help, and above all friendship.
